India’s former Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday elected as the new Vice President of India as he defeated Gopal Krishna Gandhi by 272 votes. 771 votes out of 785 votes were cast in the elections. 14 MPs did not cast their votes.
Mr Venkaiah Naidu has served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Information and Broadcasting in the current NDA administration.
Mr. Naidu was born on 1st July, 1949 in Chavatapalem, a remote village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
Right from his university days, Mr. Naidu was profoundly involved in the well-being of the common man, mostly the Farmers and the down crushed sections of the society. This led to his active participation in the political and social activities from an early stage.
For the duration of his three decades in public time, Mr Naidu has held several positions, including President of BJP.
After Venkaiah Naidu ’s victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited his residence in the national capital to congratulate him. Extending his Best wishes for a fruitful and motivating tenure, Prime Minister said he is confident that Mr Naidu will serve the nation as a diligent and dedicated Vice President, committed to the the goal of nation building.
Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi has also extended her best wishes to Venkaiah Naidu. She said the position of the Vice President has the crucial challenge of assuming a non-partisan role in running the Rajya Sabha, which acts as a store house of wisdom and sage advice for the government.
