The Union government has decided to provide Z category security for Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smriti Irani.
This development came in the wake of students demonstrating at her residence on a regular basis ever since the Rohith Vemula’s suicide in Hyderabad Central University.
Smriti Irani has so far enjoyed Y category security level. After finding that the current security level was insufficient during the review meeting, the Home Ministry decided to upgrade the Union Minister’s security to Z Category. The Home Ministry opined anti-social elements could take advantage of the current protest situation to attack Smriti Irani.
At the moment, Z or Z-plus category Security is provided for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, BJP President Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Ministers of State Kiren Rijiju and Jitendra Singh.
