The government of Tripura has issued a dress code, barring government officials from wearing jeans, cargo pants, and sunglasses.
In a note, the government also directed courts and top district bureaucrats to ensure that the dress code is strictly followed at meetings chaired by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
The note also said using mobile phones during meetings was bad-mannered to those chairing them.
The Opposition parties condemned the dress code. “The dress code has no link with the welfare of people. A person should have the freedom to wear what he likes. The government’s interference in this regard is not welcome,” said CPM state secretary, Bijan Dhar.
Earlier, the government of Madhya Pradesh had issued an advisory in October 2015, asking officials not to wear jeans and sunglasses during official meetings.
