The Republican party in the United States has apologised for a poster featuring Lord Ganesha as it offended Hindus and drew outrage from them.

The ad showed an image of Lord Ganesha with text, “Would you worship a donkey or an elephant? The choice is yours.”

The Republican party’s representation is an elephant while Democrats use donkey as their party symbol.

Fort Bend County Republican Party which published the advertisement apologised the Hindus and explained that it “was not meant to disparage Hindu customs or traditions in any way”.

Lord Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, and Vinayaka, is one of the Best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon.

As the god of beginnings, Lord Ganesha is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies.
