India’s Sikkim State has won United Nations Food and agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Future Policy Gold Award for becoming the world’s first fully organic state.

As stated by FAO, Sikkim was considered for the Gold Award for its Policies on agroecology and sustainable food systems.

The organisation also said that the policies of the state of Sikkim had helped over 66,000 Farmers, improved tourism and set an example to other nations.

The Sikkim state won the gold by beating 51 nominated policies from 25 nations. Brazil, Denmark and Equador won Silver for their policies.

Sikkim achieved its ambition to convert its agriculture to fully organic over the interval 2003 to 2016, the First State in India to achieve this distinction.

It is also among India’s most environmentally conscious states, having barred plastic water bottles and styrofoam products.
