Tesla has secured an 860,000-square-metre plot of land in Shanghai for its first Gigafactory outside the United States.
American automotive and energy company Tesla has recently signed a contract with the government of Shanghai to build its first overseas Gigafactory.
The company has secured an 860,000-square-metre plot of land in Shanghai for its first Gigafactory outside the United States.
Confirming the company’s overseas plans, Robin Ren, Tesla’s vice President of global sales said in a statement that “securing this site in Shanghai, Tesla’s first Gigafactory outside of the United States, is an important milestone for what will be our next advanced, sustainably developed manufacturing site.”
The company expects the plant to produce its first vehicles in three years. The factory will firstly have volume for about 250,000 vehicles.
Tesla specializes in electric car manufacturing and, through its SolarCity subsidiary, solar panel manufacturing.
Tesla operates multiple production and Assembly plants, particularly Gigafactory 1 near Reno, Nevada, and its core vehicle manufacturing facility at Tesla Factory in Fremont, California.
