According to Serena Williams has termed the ‘Special Ranking’ rule, introduced by the WTA for 2019, as “great”. She is of the belief that this will lift the spirits for the players to take a break from the tour to plan family and recommence their careers.
The new rule states that returning mothers, having first ranking would not be able to face a seed in the starting round of a tournament.
This change also ensures that no seed will get bumped as a result of a returning mother given a protected seeding.
Along with Serena Williams involved are other mothers on tour. One-time world number one Victoria Azarenka, have been lobbying for such rule changes. According to them, would ease the restart process for players, succeeding their childbirth.
