MP cadre IPS officer appointed new CBI director

Mr Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed in place of Alok Kumar Verma, who was removed from the post of CBI Director on January 10.

Former Director General of police of Madhya Pradesh Rishi Kumar Shukla, a 1983 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the M.P. cadre was appointed as the chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the country’s premier Investigation Agency, for a fixed tenure of two years.

At present, he is the chairman of Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation in Bhopal. He was picked from a panel of several names cleared by the high-power committee, led by PM Narendra Modi and comprising the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Shukla has been appointed in place of Alok Kumar Verma, who was removed from the post of CBI Director on January 10. His appointment comes at a time when CBI is mired in a series of controversies related to a bitter fight between former Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana, both of whom were shunted out following serious Corruption allegations against them.
