National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) suggests, the household had constructed new toilets in 2016 however only 5% are being used, and 3% had no connection to water supply.

Making India a defecation free zone
Even though, India’s BJP government had undertaken a long term project to make India a defecation free zone. Now let’s give a reality check and throw light over the issue.
Modi has claimed under the Clean India Programme to make 90% of individuals access to toilets. And as per commitment, the number of toilets had increased but were not used or functioning correctly. The intention behind the building of toilets was evident as it was unsafe for Women to go outside in the dark to relieve themselves. And secondly, open defecating in the field and near rivers or ponds for a long term is prone to spread deadly diseases.
As per the data showed in November 2018, 96.25% of houses had their toilet against 38.7% in October 2014. But the question still revolves around Are the toilets are being used?? Well, as per reports suggested by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the household had constructed new toilets in 2016 however only 5% are being used, and 3% had no connection to water supply. - The toilet had a single pit latrine or a septic tank that fills after every 5 to
7 years are making it impossible to reuse again. - Either the construction or the maintenance of the toilets is inferior.
- As per Modi’s announcement in 2015, the government schools had to build separate toilets for boys and girls, but as per 2018 reports, 23% of government toilets are not being used.
Many years later, we have come up with this issue as the problem is yet to be resolved by the government. States like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar have people who defecate in the open even after having a stable government in the respective states.
