The United States of America has decided to impose 10% tariffs on European-made Airbus planes.

It would also enact 25% duties on French wine, Scotch, Irish whiskies and cheese from across the continent.

The US has reportedly taken the decision as a punishment for illegal European Union aircraft subsidies.

The announcement arrived after the World Trade Organization (WTO) gave United States a green signal to impose tariffs on 7.5 billion dollars’ worth of EU goods annually in the long-running case.

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement that finally, after 15 years of litigation, the WTO has confirmed that the United States is entitled to impose countermeasures in response to the EU’s illegal subsidies.

Mr. Lighthizer also said, “United States expect to enter into negotiations with the European Union aimed at resolving this issue in a way that will benefit American workers.”
