The Indian government has banned approximately 258 Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Telugu States for failing to meet Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 requirements.

The Times of India reports the centre has banned 90 NGOs in Telangana and 168 in Andhra Pradesh for violating foreign funding laws.

In Andhra Pradesh, YS Viayamma Charitable Trust, Rayapati Charitable Association, Rural Education and Development Society and Aruna Mahila Mandali are among those whose registration has been cancelled under the law.

Several educational institutions and churches operating in Andhra and Telangana have been banned for failing to submit the annual returns.

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 came into effect from May 1, 2011.

While the provisions of the repealed FCRA, 1976 have generally been retained, the FCRA, 2010 is an improvement over the repealed Act as more stringent provisions have been made in order to prevent misutilisation of the foreign contribution received by the associations.
