United States raises concern over IPR issues in India

India and the United States on Tuesday agreed to explore the possibility of enhanced Market access to distinguished agricultural products.

At the discussions, the United States raised concern over the level of protection India bears to its organizations and the intellectual property rights(IPR) administration in India.

United States Trade Representative Michael Froman made a pitch for lower taxes for import of off-patent medications to India, and access for US organizations to India’s public solar energy and health insurance programs.

Mr. Froman told reporters, for drawing in world class speculations, India would require an IPR administration that runs with that.

Amid the discussions with Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Mr. Froman said he had raised the issue of whether the ‘Make In India’ policy would be one of empowering internationally competitive manufacturing or a less focused Industry behind a wall of protection.

Mr. Froman also expressed concern on India’s high levies on import of off-patent medications.
