India made a strong begin to their reply but lost four wickets for 32 runs and missed the mark on 233 in spite of skipper MS Dhoni making 65.
Captain MS Dhoni kept the Indian hopes alive with a run-a-ball 65, a thump that was studded with 2 sixes and 3 fours before he was run out by direct hit from Glenn Maxwell.
Steve Smith made 105 from 93 balls and Aaron Finch 81 as Australia posted 328-7, the highest score in a World Cup semi-final.
Australia will now play against New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
