Centre v/s Mamata: Kolkata police chief to appear before CBI

To resolve the ongoing tussle between CBI and Kolkata police, the apex court ordered Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear in front of CBI for a questioning session.

To resolve the ongoing tussle between CBI and Kolkata police, the apex court ordered Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear in front of CBI for a questioning session. “We direct the Rajeev Kumar to appear and make himself available to the CBI and faithfully co-operate with the CBI at all times… No coercive steps, including arrest, should be taken against the Kolkata Police Commissioner,” Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi ordered as the head of a three-judge Bench.

The court further neutralised the matter by scheduling the meeting between Mr Kumar and the agency at Shillong, and not in the politically disturbed area of West Bengal where Ms Banerjee was on Dharna.

CBI filed a contempt petition against Mr Kumar, West Bengal DGP and Chief Secretary. The court has asked for their replies, and the trio will have to appear before the court on 20th February, i.e. the next date of hearing if found necessary.
