A week ago, Nitin Gadkari had written to Sonia Gandhi, leaders of other opposition parties and social activist Anna Hazare welcoming them to an open debate on the land bill issue while stating that the bill was ‘very much in Farmers’ interest.
Dismissing the dialogue offer on the controversial land bill, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi on Friday alleged it was a mockery of the consensus building practice by a myopic Modi Government which was bending backwards to support industrialists and demanded that UPA’s enactment be brought back in totality.
Hailing farmers as the “spine” of the nation, Gandhi said Congress can’t support any law which harms agriculturists, and asked the Modi administration to bring back UPA’s land bill in totality.
She said the central contrast between the Congress and the BJP is in understanding agriculturist’s trouble and loss of livelihood by acquisition of land without safeguards.
Being pro-farmer does not mean against development, she said.
