Electricity Killed 18 in Chennai Hospital

Apart from the incessant rains, it seems that the luck is also not on the side of Chennai people. In an unfortunate incident, 18 patients in ICU at the Madras Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (MIOT) died after the power failure.

The oxygen supply to ventilators was cut off due to power failure and this resulted in the death of the 18. There were a total of 75 patients in the ICU at that time. Employees at the hospital couldn’t save the patients as the MIOT hospital was also flooded with rain water and patients.

After visiting the hospital along with Health Minister, Radhakrishnan, the state health secretary, speaking to media, said that the condition of 18 dead patients was highly critical.

The hospital staff couldn’t do anything as already 570 patients were being treated in the hospital. He has denied power failure as the reason for the deaths. Radhakrishnan added that the reason for the death of those 18 patients was unclear and an investigation was ordered.

Besides the above 18, 27 others died with electricity short circuit as the rain water inundated the electricity system in the hospital building. Reportedly, all the 45 dead bodies have been shifted to the Royapettah government hospital.
