Unlike 911 in USA and 999 in UK, India has different numbers for availing emergency services of police, ambulance and the fire department.
Indians will also soon get a single emergency number ‘112’ to avail all these services. The Telecom Commission has already accepted the recommendation of TRAI to make ‘112’ as the official emergency number in India.
Once this proposal gets final approval from the Union Telecom Minister, all the existing emergency numbers will be replaced with 112. The service will be operated by representatives speaking in Hindi, English and the other local languages.
At present, different emergency numbers are under implementation in India. 100, 101, 102 and 108 are being used for police, fire, ambulance and Emergency Disaster Management respectively. These contact numbers will be continued for a year even after 112 Service gets activated to let people get used to the new service.
