According to a study conducted by the Andhra University and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, the groundwater in most of the villages that fall under the capital region, Amaravati, is highly polluted and is unfit for human consumption.
As per the study, pollution indicators like total dissolved salts, chlorine, nitrates and fluorides are beyond the prescribed limits in the groundwater in most of the villages. So, the capital city, that will come up on the right bank of River Krishna is likely to face drinking water scarcity.
The study also suggests that indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides for decades caused the chemicals leaching into the soil and contaminating groundwater.
The government which has already been breaking heads to solve the issue of Kondaveeti Vagu flood water has found a new problem to face. It has to be seen what sort of methods the govt. will apply to get rid of this drinking water problem.
