United Arab Emirates’ second-largest airline company Etihad Airways has become the very first major airline operator to run a flight without any single-use plastics on board.

More than 95 single-use plastic stuffs including plates, cups, cutlery and headset bags were removed from the Brisbane-bound Earth Day flight which landed on 22nd of April.

Plastic things were replaced by sustainable amenity tools, eco-thread blankets and edible coffee cups.

“Etihad Airways will reduce its single-use plastic usage by 80 per cent by the end of 2022,” the company said in a press statement.

It also said, Etihad has become the first airline in the world to operate a single-use plastic free flight on an ultra-long haul Sector.

As of July 2018, Etihad serves 84 passenger and cargo destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, Asia and Australia from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Until terminating the São Paulo service in late March 2017, Etihad Airways was one of the few carriers to have passenger services to all six inhabited continents.
