Indian Govt. to Ban ‘Commercial Surrogacy’

As per reports, Government of India is planning to ban ‘Commercial Surrogacy’. Many foreign couples have come to India in recent years looking for a low cost parenthood as commercial surrogacy in the country has become an attractive option for foreigners.

In the recent years, India has become the “surrogacy hub” of the world. Infertile couples, mostly overseas, hire the wombs of local Women as the surrogacy is luring young local Women to make some quick bucks.

Earlier this month the apex court had expressed its concern and instructed the government to take measures to regulate the commercial surrogacy. In reply to the court, Government has filed an Affidavit saying that it does not support commercial surrogacy and it has plans to ban surrogacy service for foreigners.

The government said that it would require some time to bring the law of surrogacy for only Indian couples. Government also plans to prohibit and penalize commercial surrogacy service providers.
