A group of researchers at the University of Edinburgh have created non-natural polymers inside of living cells.

The PHYS reports that researchers used cell-friendly monomers and a photo initiator, which generated radicals on receiving UV light and then the polymer.

By doing this, researchers have demonstrated that it is possible to create synthetic polymers inside of living cells.

In their paper called “Radical polymerization inside living cells”, researcher said, “it is remarkable that free radical polymerization Chemistry can take place within such complex cellular environments”.

“This demonstration opens up a multitude of new possibilities for how chemists can modulate cellular function and behaviour and for understanding cellular behaviour in response to the generation of free radicals,” they added.
