NRI’s may soon obtain voting rights

The Center on Monday told the Supreme Court that the election commission’s suggestion to extend voting rights to NRIs through postal votes have been acknowledged in letter and spirit.

Observing the entries, a bench including Chief Justice H.L Dattu and A.K Sikri asked the Center to inform it about further steps taken to execute the proposals.

As indicated by the provisions of the Representation of People Act, an individual who is a citizen of India and who has not gained the Citizenship of some other nation and is otherwise qualified to be enlisted as a voter and who is absent from his place of ordinary residence in India owing to work, education or something else, is qualified to be enrolled as a voter in the voting demographic in which his place of residence in India, as specified in his passport, is located.
