Veteran Indian Tennis star Leander Paes created history by winning the US Open mixed doubles title along with his Swiss partner Martina Hingis. The fourth-seeded Indo-Swiss pair outsmarted unseeded Americans Bethanie Mattek and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in a prolonged final to win their third Grand Slam title this season.
Paes, 42 now, has now won 9 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and surpassed former partner India’s Mahesh Bhupathi’s record of 8 titles. It was his 17th Grand Slam title overall. With this win, the Paes-Hingis pair, who also clinched the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this season, has become the first mixed doubles pair since 1969 to win 3 Major titles in the same calendar year.
Martina Hingis is also in contention for Women’s doubles title, where she is partnering with Indian Tennis sensation Sania Mirza. This pair had earlier won the Wimbledon this year. This match is scheduled to happen today.
Paes and Sania continue to make India proud in the international arena.
