Andhra Pradesh Government has passed a resolution on New Year’s Eve renaming Rajahmundry to its old name, ‘Rajamahendravaram’. It will be implemented from New Year’s Day.
The State Government has directed all government departments and private agencies to follow the renaming of Rajahmundry to Rajamahendravaram, in a bid to restore the glory of the city. All official records should bear this new name from now on.
Going into the history, Rajamahendravaram was named after Rajaraja Narendra, one of the Eastern Chalukya kings of the Vengi kingdom in Southern India. Rajaraja Narendra established the Rajahmahendravaram city, which was renamed to Rajahmundry during the Madras Province under the British rule. Even after the formation of united Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as the State capital, Rajahmundry name was retained.
However, the newly formed AP state government is determined to restore the lost glory of AP. Hence Amaravati, a historical city, has been chosen as new State capital and now this renaming of another historic city Rajahmundry to Rajamahendravaram.
