Prime Minister Abe had criticized North Korea’s recent missile test and said he was willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over the abduction of Japanese nationals between 1970-80s by North Korea.

North Korea tested what it called “super-large multiple rocket launchers” on Oct. 31, but Japan said they were likely ballistic missiles that violated United Nations sanctions.

In 2002, North Korea admitted to abducting 13 Japanese. Japan says 17 of its citizens were abducted, 5 of whom were expelled.
