On 17th of April, the first satellite of Sri Lanka was launched into space from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Flight Facility on Virginia’s east shore.

The satellite named as Raavana 1 and it is a Sri Lankan low orbit cube research satellite.

Raavana 1’ has a volume of about 1000 cubic centimetre and it a mass of about 1.1 kg.

The lifespan of the satellite is around 1 ½ years.

The Raavana-1 launch marks Sri Lanka’s entry into the global space age.

It was designed and assembled at the Kyushu Institute of technology in Japan by two Sri Lankan scientists.

The mission of its camera is to capture the images of Sri Lanka and its bordering nations.

It will use magnetic torquers to reduce its angular velocity according to Colombo Gazette.
