Why Serena Williams’s loss at the US Open will be Remembered in History?

Serena Williams, the number one Women’s Tennis player in the world, who was the hot favorite to win the US Open this year will not win it. Her loss in the semifinal against Italian player Roberta Vinci (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) came as a shock to many. Upsets happen but Williams not making the US Open was not even considered as a possibility before the match.

Here is why this loss will go down as one of the most remembered upsets in the history of tennis.

In her career spanning 16 years, she has reached the finals of 25 Grand slams and she has won 21.  If she had won this US Open, she would have tied with Steffi Graf as the Women tennis player with mist number of titles, 22.

Apart from that, Williams was so close to win the ‘Calendar year Grand Slam’. The “calendar year Grand Slam” is when a player wins all 4 major titles in the same year and the last woman to achieve this was feat was Steffi Graf in 1988.

Serena has won all three majors of this year and her game has been practically impenetrable all this year. If she had won US Open title, she would have got the “Calendar year Grand Slam” as well.

Because of these statistics, she had enormous pressure on herself and it would be correct to say that she lost to the PRESSURE not to her OPPONENT.
