Wow: AB de Villiers’s 100 off 31 Balls Record Almost Broken

South Africa batsman AB de Villiers’s record of fastest century in ODIs of just 31 balls was almost broken by New Zealand opener Martin Guptill.

Many records tumbled in the second ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand that happened at the Hagley Oval ground in Christchurch on 28th Dec. First, New Zealand bowled out Sri Lanka for 117 runs in just 27.4 overs. Later they chased down the small target in just 8.2 overs, a record of sorts.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill scored 93 runs in just 30 balls with 9 fours and 8 sixes. If the target had been a bit higher, he would have got the opportunity to beat De Villiers’s record as he was so close. However, the recorded the second fastest half-century in ODIs by taking just 17 balls to score first 50 runs.

Apart from fastest hundred, AB de Villiers’ also has the record of fastest fifty, in just 16-balls. Guptill missed the record by just one ball as he completed his 50 in 17 balls. Guptill also recorded the fastest fifty by a New Zealander beating Brendon McCullum’s 18 ball record.
